The Overture supersonic passenger plane by Boom Supersonic is still in development. However, it did not stop American Airlines from placing an order for up to 60 aircraft with the advance payment for the first 20 aircraft already paid. This makes American Airlines the largest customer for Overture overtaking United Airlines which ordered up to 50 aircraft last year.
The Boom Supersonic company is looking to return supersonic passenger aircraft (SST) to the cloud after Concorde ceased operations in 2003. At the Farnborough Air Show last month the new 80-passenger Overture design was shown.
The aircraft aims for a maximum speed of Mach 1.7 when moving in unpopulated areas and Mach 0.94 in populated areas with a flight distance of up to 4,250 nautical miles. Supersonic Boom aims for the Overture to begin construction in 2024 with the first flight test in 2026 and start carrying passengers by 2029.
