India Revokes Intent to Ban Sales of Devices Below RM670 From China

Early last month there were reports that India was considering banning the sale of devices under 12000 Rupees (~RM670) from China. This is to prevent Chinese manufacturers from selling devices in the low-spec segment that compete with locally produced devices.

But yesterday the Ministry of Information Technology confirmed that the Indian government now has no intention of banning cheap devices from China. On the other hand, devices produced by local companies such as Micromax are seen to be able to compete without being given protection from the government.

As in Malaysia, the mobile phone market is dominated by manufacturers from China. The situation is less pleasant because India and China have a tense relationship after a clash between the armies of the two countries on the Himalayan border.
