South Korean President Yooj Suk-yeol today granted a pardon to Samsung deputy chairman Lee Jae-yong who was previously jailed for his involvement in the country's high-profile corruption and breach of trust scandal.
The pardon was given to Lee who is also the grandson of the founder of Samsung because his expertise is needed when the country is facing an economic crisis. On August 13 last year, Lee was granted parole after serving only 18 months in prison despite being sentenced to five years in prison.
Among the conditions imposed on him is a five-year travel ban with special permission required before leaving South Korea.
