Instagram Sued for RM1.8 Billion for Mishandling Information of Underage Users

Meta's subsidiaries and separate suits are absent. Recently, Instagram was reported to have been sued for $402 million or RM1.8 billion due to errors in mishandling the information of their underage users a few years ago.

The suit was filed by the Irish Data Protection Commission who said that several years ago, Instagram mismanaged the accounts of their underage users, allowing these users to open business accounts.

Although at the time Instagram had implemented a number of policies that limited their access, these children's accounts were seen to be able to open business accounts, which would publicly display details such as addresses and call details.

Lately it has been seen that Instagram in particular has introduced a number of settings and policies specifically for users under the age of 18, such as ensuring that the account is locked and no messages can be sent as long as the account of this underage user does not follow the account.

Meta says that they have fixed various problems like this and that the suit against them is said to be disproportionate, and will appeal to have this suit dismissed or reduced in value.

In the meantime, the DPC said that they will announce more details about the suit next week.
