Disney+ ad-supported subscriptions launch in the US today with fees starting at $7.99 for Disney+ only and rising to $69.99 for Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+ and Live TV subscriptions.
The ad-supported plan is offered by Disney+ to increase the number of customers who may feel that the existing plan is too expensive. This is part of Disney+'s plan to make their streaming service profitable by 2024.
Under Bob Chapek, Disney+'s expenses were hidden to make it look like it wasn't posting big losses. As with other streaming platforms, the challenge of retaining customers has to be faced post-pandemic. Netflix launched their ad-supported subscription service last month in 12 select countries at a lower price of $6.99 per month.
