Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) yesterday started the commercial production of chips with 3nm technology. Through this technology, next-generation chips will operate faster but reduce power consumption by up to 35% compared to 5nm chips.
This 3nm chip is manufactured at TSMC's Fab 18 located in Taiwan's Southern Science Park in Tainan. It will be used on smart devices, tablets, computers, cloud storage browsers and augmented reality devices. Among the early customers of chips with TSMC's 3nm technology is Apple, which is reported to produce the A17 Bionic chip for the iPhone 15.
TSMC chairman Mark Liu said their 3nm chip technology will generate $1.5 trillion in revenue in five years. TSMC became the second company to have the ability to manufacture 3nm chips after Samsung became the first in June.
