For years Apple and Facebook (now Meta) have been the ideal workplaces for technology workers. But according to the latest data from Glassdoor, it looks like their heyday has passed.
Glassdoor has just released its 2023 list of the 100 Best Places to Work, which lists the best workplace companies in the United States. But the Apple and Meta names are not visible on the list.
Last year, Meta was ranked 47th, a significant drop from 11th in 2021. Meanwhile, Apple last year was ranked 56th, down from 31st in 2021.
To determine the rating, Glassdoor analyzed anonymous reviews posted by employees on its platform. They considered hundreds of thousands of companies with 1,000 or more employees between October 19, 2021 and October 17, 2022.
Glassdoor Lead Economist Daniel Zhao said Apple and Meta's absence from the list of the best places to work this year was quite surprising.
"Apple has always been on this list for the past 15 years, since this list started," Zhao said as quoted by CNBC, Saturday (14/1/2023).
"And then Meta has been on the list since 2011, and it was number one before... That doesn't mean Meta and Apple are bad places to work, they just went down a little bit because the list was more competitive this year."
Zhao reveals some of the things that might have caused Apple and Meta to be left out of this list. For Apple's case, Zhao estimates that this is due to the return to office policy which has received mixed responses from employees.
Meanwhile, Meta is in the process of shifting its massive strategy as a metaverse company. The company created by Mark Zuckerberg has also just announced large-scale layoffs that have affected 11,000 employees.
Although Apple and Meta are no longer filled, the list of the 100 best places to work is still filled by many technology companies. For example, Nvidia is ranked fifth, Google is ranked eight, Microsoft is ranked 13th, and LinkedIn is ranked 19th.
