Following in Samsung's footsteps, Oppo will reportedly make its own HP chipset

Oppo is reportedly developing its own chipset for smartphones. This new chipset is expected to launch in 2024.

Rumors about the development of this chipset come from tipster IceUniverse. In its tweet on Twitter, IceUniverse said Oppo had hired thousands of engineers to develop the SoC, as quoted from GSM Arena.

Other details about the mysterious chipset are still unknown. But it is possible that the chipset will be based on the ARM architecture using Cortex CPUs and Mali GPUs.

It is not yet known whether this chipset will debut on Oppo flagship phones or even on middle class phones. Currently, most Oppo phones use chipsets from Qualcomm and Mediatek.

Oppo itself has developed two custom chips, namely MariSilicon X and MariSilicon Y. MariSilicon X is an imaging NPU that debuted on the Oppo Find X5 series to improve the quality of photos and videos taken in low light conditions.

Meanwhile, MariSilicon Y was just announced at the Oppo INNO Day 2022 event. This Bluetooth audio chipset promises 24 bit/192kHz lossless sound wirelessly. Currently the MariSilicon Y chip has not been released publicly.

It is not yet known which company will be hooked up by Oppo to develop this chipset. Oppo itself has already partnered with TSMC to make MariSilicon X chips, so it's possible the two will collaborate again.

The news about Oppo developing its own mobile chipset is actually not something new. In 2021, the Chinese vendor is reportedly interested in building a custom SoC for flagship phones using TSMC's 3nm processing that will debut in 2023.

If these rumors come true, then Oppo will follow in the footsteps of Samsung, Google and Apple as mobile phone vendors who also develop their own chipsets.
