India Mandates Use of USB-C on Smartphones from 2025

Europe will mandate the use of USB-C on electronic devices in European Union member states starting December 2024. This opens the way for the iPhone to finally use USB-C after a long time stubbornly using Lightning. According to a Business Standard report this morning, India will make it mandatory to use USB-C on smartphones from March 2025.

The report quoted Rohit Kumar Singh who is the secretary of India's Ministry of Consumer Affairs. The decision to standardize the use of USB-C as the sole charging port of smartphones was taken by India after taking feedback from stakeholders in the industry.

Apart from standardizing the charging of smartphones and tablets, India also wants to standardize the charging system for wearable devices in their country but the date has not been announced.
