The chatbot ChatGPT which is on the rise was created by OpenAI, of course by their genius engineers. However, the manufacture is also assisted by employees in Kenya with an important role. But unfortunately, they are underpaid by western standards and the severity of their work.
So, we quoted from the Independent, Monday (30/1/2023) their job is to filter and ensure that ChatGPT does not use inappropriate words, for example those that are obscene or hateful. They are paid between USD 1 to USD 2 per hour.
These outsourced workers had to be exposed to violent, sexual and other content, in order to make ChatGPT a perfect and intelligent tool. According to Time magazine, these workers from Kenya are exposed to content from the 'darkest areas of the internet' including child sexual abuse, bestiality, murder, suicide, torture, self-harm and incest.
The Kenyan team is managed by Sama, a San Francisco-based company. They claim that in anticipation, their workers can take advantage of individual and group therapy sessions with professionally trained and licensed mental health therapists.
One worker tasked with the text-tagging text told TIME he was distressed after reading a graphic description of a man having inappropriate sex. "It was torture," he said.
Sama reportedly ended all of his contract work for OpenAI in February 2022, much earlier than planned. It is not known what caused it, maybe because it was considered sufficient.
ChatGPT became popular because of its ability which is considered amazing in responding to various questions with text-like results. Many praised it even though criticism also came, for example it was used by students for shortcuts in doing writing assignments or even threatening various kinds of work.
