The series The Last of Us, which airs on HBO, is busy talking on social media. Google also does not want to be left behind to enliven the popularity of this series.
Google added scary easter eggs if you searched for "The Last of Us" on desktop or mobile. These Easter eggs feature mushrooms crawling across the screen.
After searching for "The Last of Us" on Google, scroll down until you see a red mushroom icon. Tap or click the icon to display Cordyceps mushrooms on the screen.
By tapping or clicking the screen many times, the animated mushroom will continue to spread until it covers the screen. You can share an image of a Google Search screen covered in mold by using the Share button, or click the "X" button to clear the screen of mold.
The Last of Us series itself is adapted from the PlayStation game of the same name which was developed by developer Naughty Dog. The game and series focus on the adventures of Joel and Ellie in a post-apocalyptic world.
The Last of Us imagines a world that was almost wiped out after an outbreak of the parasitic fungus Cordyceps which can turn humans into horrible zombie-like creatures. The series is set in 2023, 20 years after the plague broke out.
The Last of Us series itself has just aired episode two on HBO. This episode starts with a cold open which shows the beginning of the Cordyceps outbreak which apparently started in Indonesia.
