Windows 11 File Explorer Wants to Be Overhauled, So What's It Like?

There are many changes that Microsoft made when updating Windows 10 to Windows 11, including the appearance of File Explorer.

But now Microsoft is planning a major overhaul of the File Explorer interface, including integrating it with a number of Windows features.

In the internal mockup obtained by Windows Central, it can be seen that there are indeed significant changes in terms of appearance. For example, the header section is simplified with a row of icons and a home button.

Then the copy paste button was moved to a separate banner below the header. The home button in the header is likely to direct the user to a page containing the recommended, pinned or recently accessed document.

Oh yes, Microsoft will also integrate File Explorer with OneDrive and Microsoft 365. If the user highlights a document, the cloud and email integration will appear in the description section.

In the description section you can also see workgroup members working on the document, including what they are currently working on, we were quoted as saying from Techspot, Friday (27/1/2023).

There is also a 'gallery' area which has new features. For example, when a user highlights a photo using the mouse cursor, a preview will appear with a larger photo.

Microsoft may also add a tag option for documents, which should make documents easier to organize. Previously they also added a browser-style "new tab" feature for File Explorer, which was later also brought over to Notepad.

This File Explorer overhaul is expected to be finalized before the end of 2023, and will probably be the big update showcased at Moment, or the Windows 11 23H2 update.
