To compete with the ChatGPT AI that Microsoft has built into Bing, Google is showing off Bard, which is also an AI-based chatbot.
However, in a promotional video exhibited by Google, Bard answered the wrong question about NASA's newest space telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In the video, Bard is asked to explain the latest findings from the telescope simply to a 9-year-old child.
Of the three questions asked, the first two were answered correctly. But the answers to all three questions are wrong. Bard said JWST is the first telescope that can photograph planets outside the solar system.
In fact, in NASA's records, the first photo of this exoplanet was taken using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, we were quoted as saying from Phone Arena, Thursday (9/2/2023).
Google then removed the question from the video, and replaced it with a new question. But the impact can not be avoided. Google shares fell by USD 8.04 or 7.44% and made Google's valuation decrease by USD 100 billion.
In addition, Microsoft has also just released a new version of Bing which is equipped with AI chatbots like ChatGPT, but with a more sophisticated AI engine.
Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai calls Bard an "experimental conversational AI service" that will answer questions and take part in conversations. This service will be made available to selected testers prior to its public launch.
"Bard seeks to combine the breadth of world knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models. These (tools) draw information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses," Pichai said in his blog post as quoted by The Guardian, Tuesday (7/2/2023).
Just like ChatGPT, Bard is also powered by large language models (LLM). In Bard's case, this chatbot uses a lighter version of LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) which requires less computing power so it can be used by many people.
