Only Twitter Blue Customers Can Use Two-Factor Authentication Via SMS

Twitter suddenly changed their user account security policy this morning with a two-factor authentication (2FA) system via SMS that can only be used by Twitter Blue customers. To non-customers, they need to change to an identity verification application or security key.

This step will save costs for Twitter because there is no need to send SMS to millions of customers who activate the 2FA system via SMS. Notifications to change to a 2FA authentication system other than SMS began to be received by users of the Twitter application an hour ago and we ourselves saw it in the Android application.

Twitter said the measure was taken for security reasons. SMS according to them is not a truly secure 2FA authentication system. In fact they say that 2FA authentication via SMS is currently dependent on country to country so it is not necessarily fully supported for Twitter Blue customers.

Regular Twitter users are given 30 days to change their 2FA system with the feature no longer being supported after March 20, 2023.
