Spotify May Want to Be a Social Media Platform

The trend of streaming apps becoming social media is likely to grow. Started with TikTok offering vertical video content streaming, then added a DM feature for users to send messages to each other. Now Spotify is the same, maybe looking to become a social media platform.

Last year, Spotify tested a Community feature that allowed users to see friends' streaming activity. Various iterations of this feature have been introduced including with special tabs. In the fourth quarter earnings presentation, Spotify investors were reportedly aware of the testing of these features and wanted to know what the real plan was.

Daniel Ek, as the CEO of Spotify stated that he wants Spotify to have a more interesting user experience, capturing the hearts of users so that they can remain loyal. I was able to try the Spotify Community feature before, but it only appeared for a while and disappeared from the account.

Spotify has also recently reached over 200 million paid subscribers, making this feature more suitable to introduce for users to interact with each other. What do you think about Spotify becoming a platform beyond audio streaming and towards social media?
