Two years ago the people of Japan were shocked by a gibbon monkey or gibbon named Momo, who became pregnant while alone in a cage. But now the mystery has finally been solved.
It turns out that Momo was impregnated by an agile 34-year-old male gibbon, Ito. Incidentally, Ito's cage is indeed close to Momo.
The zoo revealed that the two met through a small hole in a steel plate attached between their cages. More or less, the hole is about nine millimeters in size.
As a result, Momo became pregnant and now the baby has been born, but has not yet been named. It is known that the cub weighs about two kilograms, and is growing healthy under the loving care of its mother.
"This is a precious life that was born into the world, we will continue to take good care of him and hope he will live a long and healthy life," said Hideki Hisano, deputy zoo director, as reported by us from CNN, Saturday (11/2/2023).
As previously reported, the 12-year-old white gibbon monkey surprised the keepers of the Kujukushima Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Nagasaki, Japan. In February 2021 to be precise, it was discovered that she became pregnant while alone in a cage without a male partner.
As additional information, gibbons are a species of small ape that has a loud voice when it sings. He can swing from one grip to another, at a fairly high speed of 35 miles per hour.
To date, there are dozens of gibbon species native to various parts of Asia, from the northeast to China. Not spared also comes from Indonesia precisely Kalimantan.
This animal is an endangered species, because its population is decreasing in nature. This is because their habitat is threatened by human activities, such as deforestation, mining, and road construction.
