In 2019, Intel sold their 4G and 5G modem business for smart devices to Apple due to a restructuring that focused on their core business. However they seem to have a hold on another modem business, namely 4G and 5G modems for laptops.
Laptops with cellular capabilities are nothing new, but Intel has until now developed modem components for laptops, and has recently sold a stake in that business to MediaTek.
To ensure that this ownership transfer process happens in an orderly manner, Intel will send some engineers to MediaTek until this May, and Intel is expected to end their involvement in the 4G and 5G industry by July.
Intel customers who previously still use WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Network) technology will move to MediaTek after this, although Intel is expected to retain the rights to certain patents.
