Brain implant firm Neuralink owned by Elon Musk wants to start their clinical trials on humans in the near future. Previously, Musk had said that it would start in the near future but it has been delayed for several years with the application to the FDA being rejected due to some safety issues of implant recipients.
According to Reuters, Neuralink is currently looking for partners in brain surgery before trials can begin. Citing six internal sources, among the firms in talks is Arizona-based Barrow Neurological Institute. Through their implant, Neuralink wants to restore mobility in stroke patients and make it interface with computers to enable direct communication.
Neuralink previously had a collaboration with the University of California, Davis to conduct tests on animals but it was terminated in 2020 with no reason given. Last year Neuralink was investigated by the United States Department of Animal Health for alleged abuse of test animals with a high death rate.
