With a Capacity of 24346 TEU, MSC Irina Is Now The World's Largest Cargo Ship

It is estimated that over 90% of the world's cargo is carried using cargo ships. It is still the lowest cost mode of transportation even though it takes longer than airplanes. During the pandemic, restrictions imposed by China caused disruptions to global supply chains. With costs increasing, cargo ships with large capacity are in great demand.

China Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd (CSSC) this week announced that the cargo ship MSC Irina has been launched with a capacity of 24,346 TEU containers. This makes it the world's largest capacity cargo ship overtaking MSC Tessa with a capacity of 24,116 TEU just four days earlier.

Despite having a difference of 230 TEU, these two cargo ships have the same size which is 399.9 meters long. This is almost the length of four football fields. Despite its gigantic size, the latest technology such as the latest air lubrication system allows the ship to operate with fuel savings of up to 4% compared to previous generation cargo ships.
