Huawei And SMIC Reportedly Developing 5nm Chips

Huawei Mate 60 surprised the world because it is the first Huawei device in four years that can use 5G network. This is achieved through the use of the Kirin 9000s chip which is also a self-designed chip. Even though it was simply produced using 7nm technology, it still surprised the world because so far it has been seen as impossible to do by Chinese companies.

Today there are reports that Huawei and SMIC are developing their first 5nm chips as well. Huawei remains with SMIC which produces the Kirin 9000s chip. This 5nm chip is believed to use the old DUV technology because SMIC is not allowed to import more sophisticated EUV machines.

Other manufacturers have already moved to EUV because of lower costs and higher yields. To remain competitive, the existing DUV machine was modified to produce this 5nm chip. Previously, there were predictions that China would need a few more years before being able to produce 7nm chips, let alone 5nm chips.
