Meta Believes It Doesn't Have To Pay News Publishers Because Links Are Voluntarily Shared On Their Platforms

Recently, the Indonesian government has announced that a number of digital platforms will be required to pay publishers of news content, thus benefiting both parties. Indonesia aims for this legislation to be enforced within the next 6 months.

Following on from that, now Meta commented, stating that they believe Meta does not need to pay for the content in question, because the news or content in question is shared voluntarily on the platform under Meta.

It is not yet known how the Indonesian government will enforce this new legislation, and what form of platform is subject to it. Previously, the Canadian government had forced for more or less the same thing, but Meta took steps to no longer display news sharing and hide it directly from Facebook - at the same time giving an impact in terms of traffic and so on to publishers in the country.
