Android XR Smart Glasses Capabilities Officially Shown

Google's smart glasses will be launched in the near future with the hardware also being manufactured by Samsung. At Google I/O, these glasses and their capabilities were officially shown after being first shown at a TED Talk event a few months ago.

Google confirmed that the smart glasses using the Android XR operating system will come in two versions. One with a screen built into the right glasses and the other without a built-in screen. Both will be equipped with a camera, and a built-in speaker. Control is done using voice commands through Gemini Live interaction. In addition to smart glasses, Android XR will also be used on a see-through video headset (XR) and a see-through optical ship set.

In the demo on stage, users can ask the glasses to send messages received using Google Messages. Then users can request information about the image being viewed. The version with the built-in screen can display the text of the conversation and also navigation instructions using Google Maps.

The real-time language switching feature with subtitles displayed directly on the smart glasses screen will also be possible in the future. On stage, a feature displaying English subtitles while two users were speaking Persian and Hindi was also shown.

Also announced this morning was that Google will also be working with Gentle Monster, Warby Parker and Kering Eyewear to launch Android XR smart glasses in addition to Samsung. App development for the smart glasses will open this year but based on rumors, the first product will most likely be launched in 2026 after the XR Project Moohan headset is launched later this year.
