Recently, there has been talk of a merger between two Southeast Asian tech giants, Grab and GoTo (Gojek-Tokopedia). Technically, the talks have been underway since late 2023, but until recently, they have been denied.
Recently, it has been reported that Indonesia's state-owned asset, Danantara Indonesia, which was established earlier this year, has expressed its intention to invest in the merger if it happens soon.
Regarding this merger, Indonesia's anti-competition agency has recently reportedly begun the process of auditing the likelihood of adverse impacts that will occur if this merger is sealed. The Indonesian government itself has also expressed concerns about a Singapore company owning a majority stake in an Indonesian tech giant.
Grab is also reported to be looking to acquire GoTo around the middle of this year, and GoTo could be worth US$7 billion (~RM29.5 billion) when the merger between the two companies takes place.
GoTo is a combination of two giant Indonesian digital companies previously known as Gojek and Tokopedia which merged in early 2021, and is now the largest technology development company in the country.
