MCMC: Mobile Phone Data Collection Is Anonymous, And For Statistical Purposes Only

Following the report presented today regarding MCMC requesting telecommunications companies to share user phone and internet call records, MCMC itself has now published an official response in this regard.

MCMC said the data collected is for statistical purposes and to assist in developing data-based policies. All data is collected anonymously and no data that can identify a user is accessed, processed or shared with MCMC by telecommunications companies.

MCMC said the data collected can help in knowing the distribution rate of mobile subscribers and user density in a mukim, area, DUN and so on. The data is also said to help in identifying tourist or user hotspots.

MCMC stressed that the data shared by telecommunications companies cannot be used to identify users, since it is all anonymous.

MCMC added that this initiative is in line with what various parties are doing at the international level, where telecommunications data is used to continue to improve the interests of the country, while at the same time maintaining the security and privacy of users.
