The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has now announced that it is taking court action by filing civil actions against two channels on the Telegram platform, namely the “Edisi Siasat” and “Edisi Khas” channels.
MCMC said that both channels are spreading content that violates the act, which has the potential to erode public trust in the country’s public institutions and affect public order. Both channels are already well-known due to the sharing of several internal allegations involving government agencies, authorities, and even politicians.
This is the first time that MCMC has been seen taking action against a Telegram channel. This step is seen to be in line with the social media licensing requirements since early 2025. MCMC also said that this step was taken because Telegram failed to deal with the content that was repeatedly reported.
In line with this, MCMC said that Telegram will be given the appropriate space to present its defense.
