Micron Trade Union in Taoyuan to Strike This Week in Solidarity with Workers in Taichung

As is known, employees at the memory and storage chip manufacturer Micron in Taiwan are set to receive a bonus of NT$1 million. However, discussions are still ongoing with the company’s two trade unions regarding the inclusion of a long-term profit-sharing arrangement.

It has recently been reported that the Micron trade union at the Taoyuan plant will begin a strike this Thursday, October 22, 2026, in solidarity with Micron employees at the Taichung plant. The union is scheduled to meet with Micron’s management on the same day to discuss the bonus package and long-term profit-sharing for the workers at that facility.

For context, Micron employs 15,000 people across its memory and storage chip production plants in Taoyuan and Taichung. While the NT$1 million bonus for these employees is considered very generous, the unions at both locations are also seeking a long-term profit-sharing component—specifically in the form of company shares—to be added to the bonus, similar to the approach taken by the South Korean memory chip manufacturer, SK Hynix.

This strike is not an entirely new development; the Micron trade union at the Taoyuan plant held meetings earlier this month, but no consensus was reached. Consequently, the union has decided to authorize a strike, which will continue until company management agrees to their demands. It is expected that the labor union at the Taichung plant will make the same demands as those at the Taoyuan plant, leaving Micron’s management to decide whether to accede to these demands or, alternatively, to take steps to ensure that the production of their memory and storage components remains unaffected by the strike.
