Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1+ Gen1 Introduced – Smart Glasses Chip Update Now With AI Capabilities

The smart glasses device segment is seen growing, with offerings from companies such as Huawei, Meta and Ray-Ban, Snap, Xiaomi, XReal and others. Qualcomm, as a semiconductor chip manufacturer that powers many electronic devices, has introduced an update to its smart glasses processing chip, namely the Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1+ Gen1.

This chip is an update to the Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 chip that was launched around September 2023, which now comes with the ability to process AI tasks, which means that glasses powered by this chip no longer require an Internet connection or a smart device for that purpose.

The Hexagon NPU chip built into the Snapdragon AR1+ Gen1 SoC allows the device to process Small Language Model tasks. An example given is AI that provides suggestions for questions such as asking for recipes for lunch or dinner when you are at the supermarket.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm also said that this processor chip will come in a smaller size which will allow device makers to make thinner and lighter products, as well as longer battery life.

They also said that companies like Meta and XReal have already started the process of developing smart glasses with this Snapdragon AR1+ Gen1 processor chip, and will show it off soon.
