WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will allow users to set the download quality for photos and videos. With this option, users can specify whether the content that is automatically downloaded is in standard or HD quality.
This feature provides better control over storage and data usage on the device. Standard quality helps save storage and data space by compressing the file, while HD quality preserves the clarity of visual details but uses more storage and data.
In addition, WhatsApp also uses an upload system that allows users to send both standard and HD settings for each media file. When someone sends a photo or video in HD quality, their device will upload both quality settings. The recipient can then choose which version to automatically download depending on their settings.
If the recipient sets the automatic download to standard quality, the app will download the normal quality by default. However, if they want to view the file in HD quality, the HD version can still be accessed manually as long as it is available for use. This feature is currently being tested among beta users and will be expanded to more users in a few weeks.
