Communications Minister, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil now stated that the government is considering making content labels mandatory for content generated using artificial intelligence. This will be enforced under the Online Safety Act 2024 which will come into force at the end of this year.
This step is seen as very important in addressing the misuse of artificial intelligence, especially on social media – which can lead to fraud, defamation, impersonation, etc. This label will need to be implemented by social media platforms, and other platform owners.
In fact, recently, there have been several reports of people being deceived by the use of artificial intelligence in promoting non-existent locations – thus impacting those who go there, especially the elderly who find it difficult to recognize artificial intelligence-generated content.
The Minister also stated that today, several platforms have begun to implement voluntary labeling of artificial intelligence-generated content, in helping their users identify it.
