The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced that it has begun a public consultation session on its proposal for a Regulatory Framework for the Retention, Preservation and Disclosure of Communications Data for Investigations.
This move is in line with the latest amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Under the new additions, it focuses on the legal basis for the retention, preservation and disclosure of communications data in support of criminal investigations.
As many are aware, today the digital world plays an important role in one’s daily life, and access to authentic and accurate data can assist in criminal investigations. Under this regulatory framework, it will assist authorities, while at the same time ensuring that the privacy of the public continues to be safeguarded.
MCMC is opening this public consultation session until 8 August 2025, allowing for feedback on the development of a balanced and inclusive regulatory framework.
