Meta is considering using artificial intelligence (AI) models developed by rivals such as Google and OpenAI in its services, according to a report by The Information. Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) management wants to use the competitor’s text-based AI into its Meta AI chatbot system.
The report comes after Meta announced a partnership with Midjourney to use a generative AI model to generate images. The same report said that using the competitor’s model was just a temporary measure to ensure that Meta’s Llama 5 model under development would have comparable capabilities.
MSL was formed just a few months ago, with Meta spending hundreds of millions on poaching employees from OpenAI, Google, Apple and Microsoft. But within a short period of time, MSL was split into four different groups, staffing levels were reduced and hiring was frozen.
