Online fraud continues to be a serious threat when losses recorded reached RM1.12 billion for the period January to June 2025. The Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) revealed this figure in a statement, thus showing a significant increase in cybercrime in the country.
To curb such crimes, the government has strengthened the role of the National Fraud Response Centre (NSRC) as a one-stop centre operating 24 hours a day since July 1. Through the NSRC, victims can make a report directly via the 997 line without having to attend the police station.
KDN also announced that several additional measures are being implemented including international cooperation, improvements to the Penal Code to deal with cybercrime, and the implementation of the SemakMule 2.0 portal. This portal allows the public to check the status of bank accounts, phone numbers and companies that may be involved in fraudulent activities.
It is hoped that these measures will strengthen prevention efforts and increase public awareness of the risks of online fraud which are increasingly prevalent.
