Valve, the developer of the Steam digital game store, has recently confirmed that for most countries around the world, they will no longer be able to use PayPal as a payment platform for purchasing video games on the platform.
Valve says that this has been going on since July 2025, when it was first revealed that PayPal payments had been removed. Initial speculation was that it was because Steam or PayPal were updating their payment platform support, but with this announcement, it has now been confirmed that PayPal payments can only be used with a small number of currencies.
The currencies that can be used to make payments on Steam using PayPal include the Australian Dollar (AUD), Canadian Dollar (CND), Euro, Great Britain Pound (GBP), US Dollar (USD) and Yen only.
Valve explained that other currencies are no longer supported because PayPal's receiving banks will no longer process currencies from countries other than those specified. Due to this, PayPal payments have been closed for most other countries.
Previously, Steam has been forced to delist certain games due to substandard content, or risk being blocked from using Mastercard and Visa payment platforms. Valve has confirmed that the issue with PayPal is not related to content sold on the platform.
For Malaysia, we have a variety of payment options for the Steam store other than PayPal, including ShopeePay, GrabPay, Touch’n’Go eWallet and eClub Points.
