xAI Sues Apple, OpenAI – Says Both Are Stifling Competition in AI

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm xAI has filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, alleging that the two companies conspired to stifle competition in the artificial intelligence arena. The lawsuit was filed not only by xAI, but also by social media company X, which xAI has now acquired.

xAI says Apple is not prioritizing other AI apps that compete with ChatGPT, including the Grok app, on the App Store. Instead, it is prioritizing OpenAI’s ChatGPT, including integrating it into Apple products. At the same time, xAI says Apple is giving iPhone users no reason to download other AI apps, due to ChatGPT’s built-in integration into Apple products like iOS and macOS.

In addition, xAI said Apple also did not include the X and Grok apps under the “Must Have Apps” category on the App Store, compared to the ChatGPT app which was included in the section – even though both apps have good scores and high user numbers.

The lawsuit filing is seen as in line with what Elon Musk said a few weeks ago. However, at the time, Apple denied that the App Store was biased as alleged.
