Budget 2026: Consumer Protection Act to Be Amended to Include Lemon Law Elements

One of the amendments to the law that we are sure many Malaysians want is the addition of a “Lemon Law” to the Consumer Protection Act (1999).

In short, the addition of the Lemon Law ensures that consumers and buyers of any product from smart devices to cars will be entitled to receive compensation for the product they purchased if it remains defective even after being repaired several times, including exchange for a new product.

This also ensures that products sold in Malaysia are all of high quality and can be repaired by anyone with sufficient equipment and knowledge, and ensures that the repaired device or vehicle is good enough to be used without problems.

Until now, the Consumer Protection Act (1999) has been seen to ensure that the products sold are in line with the specifications stated by the selling company, in addition to ensuring that new products purchased are free from any defects at the time of purchase.

As mentioned, the Lemon Law is something that Malaysians have been eagerly waiting for. When this amendment becomes official, the power will be more on the side of buyers who pay for their devices and hardware.
