Facebook and Instagram Ordered to Show Non-Algorithmic Timelines in the Netherlands

A Dutch court has ordered Facebook and Instagram to show non-algorithmic timelines to users in the country. Timelines that use user data are found to be in breach of the European Union’s (EU) Digital Services Act (DSA).

Meta has been given two weeks to provide users with an easy option to view their timelines without the algorithm-driven content feed. A chronological timeline without profiling the account holder’s usage habits must also be offered. At the same time, Meta is not allowed to reset its algorithmic timelines every time the app is reopened.

Meta representatives said they would appeal the court’s order. Meta also said changes to its system had already been made to meet the DSA requirements.
