Lockheed Martin Unveils Family of Flying Wing VTOL Drones for Cargo and Weapons

This year, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth confirmed that the country's drone capabilities are behind countries such as Turkey, China, Russia and Iran. The battlefields of Ukraine and Azerbaijan have shown that small drones that are cheap compared to conventional weapons are very effective in modern warfare. Therefore, weapons manufacturers are starting to develop various new drone systems in the hope that they will be used by the US military.

Lockheed Martin Sikorsky has unveiled a family of VTOL flying wing drones Nomad that can be used to carry cargo and also serve as a weapons platform. Coming in four different sizes, all Nomads take off and land vertically. There are two engine pods on the wings and a center section that houses cargo or weapons according to mission requirements.

Unlike regular drones, the Nomad has a conventional aircraft design in that it changes from vertical to horizontal flight without a propeller sending system like the V-22 Osprey aircraft.

So far, Sikorsky has successfully flown the Nomad 50 prototype with a wingspan of 10.3 feet, with the Nomad 100 with an 18-foot wingspan under construction. This can then be scaled up to a Group 4/5 drone weighing 1,320 pounds and above.
