The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability has now shared that Malaysia will use a new numerical weather forecasting system powered by supercomputers (supercomputers), allowing weather forecasts to be issued as early as 14 days in advance. This represents a double increase compared to current weather forecasts with the existing system that issues forecasts around seven days in advance.
For this purpose, a 6 Petaflops supercomputer will be used. The supercomputer will be located at the Public Sector Data Centre, Kulim, Kedah. This new forecasting system will also use HPC (High Performance Computing) technology, as well as being equipped with artificial intelligence support and big data analytics. This will allow weather forecasts to be made better and more accurately.
This development will also allow the people to be better prepared in advance, especially if their location is categorized as flood-risk.
This new system is expected to be completed by 2027.
