Meta Introduces New Security Feature to Prevent Online Scams

Meta is introducing a new anti-scam feature to protect users. On WhatsApp, a warning will appear if a user tries to share their screen with an unknown contact during a video call. This step helps prevent scams that may involve attempts to obtain sensitive information such as verification codes.

Next, in Messenger, a more sophisticated fraud detection system is being tested. When enabled, users will be warned if they receive a suspicious message from a new contact, as well as the option to send the message for AI review. If a scam is detected, users will receive more information and recommendations such as blocking or reporting the account.

On Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp, users can set up Passkeys to log in more securely using fingerprint, facial recognition or PIN from a mobile device.

On Facebook and Instagram, the Security Checkup feature can help check security settings and provide recommendations such as changing passwords.

Meanwhile, on WhatsApp, Privacy Checkup makes it easier for users to manage privacy settings such as who can add them to Groups.

Meta also shared safety tips to help seniors avoid scams. Since the beginning of this year, nearly 8 million accounts on Facebook and Instagram linked to scammers have been detected and blocked. Meta is also working with relevant parties to strengthen efforts to combat scams targeting this group.
