Prima Retinal Implant Successfully Restores Vision to Blind Individuals

Last year we published a report on the Prima implant being placed on the retinas of 38 individuals undergoing clinical trials. After a year, a study report was published by the Science Corporation that developed it and Prima successfully restored vision to 26 of the 38 test participants. Of the original 38 participants, only 32 remained with the implant for a year and 26 of these said their vision had improved with an effectiveness of 80%.

The Prime implant, a 2mm square, was placed on the retinas of 38 clinical trial participants. To regain vision, participants were given a pair of glasses equipped with a camera. The camera signal was then sent to the Prima surface which was covered in 378 pixels that were sensitive to infrared light. The Prima then sent an electrical signal directly to the brain which then converted it into an image that humans could understand.

The restored vision was in the form of pixels and only in monochrome mode. It still did not restore normal vision but it was still a positive development to allow blind individuals to regain vision like in the science fiction series Star Trek.

In addition to Prima, Neuralink has also received FDA approval to conduct trials of the Blindsight Implant they developed. Unlike Prima, Blindsight will send image signals directly to the brain of the implant recipient.
