OpenAI Delays ChatGPT Advertising and Agent Features Due to Gemini Threat

The third anniversary of ChatGPT’s launch was on November 30. In the blink of an eye, the landscape of education, media, art, and social media usage has changed in an instant, and not all of it positively. ChatGPT has become as synonymous with AI as Google is with web search. But ChatGPT’s dominance is now under threat from other services, notably Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude.

According to a recent report by The Information, Sam Altman has sent a “code red” memo to OpenAI staff to improve the company’s product capabilities due to this threat. As a result, new features such as ads, shopping and health agents, and the Pulse personal assistant are now being temporarily delayed to focus on improving ChatGPT.

Key features such as speed, the ability to answer more questions, improved trust, and better personalization need to be improved. To make this effort a success, Altman encouraged the team at OpenAI to move to accelerate development.

In addition to the issue of the product no longer being unique compared to what competitors offer, OpenAI also has to deal with the issue of the company still not recording any profits. The Sora application, for example, is estimated to be losing $15 million a day due to providing free generation. Dozens of Stargate data center projects require trillions of dollars in investment and the company does not have the funds to continue.
