Small Outline Compression Attached Memory Module (SOCAMM) memory is a memory format that has been introduced that allows a computer's memory components to be present with lower space usage, while at the same time presenting very fast data transmission and reading speeds.
Recently, Samsung has shown the use of the SOCAMM2 memory format, which is SOCAMM format memory developed specifically for use in server machines in artificial intelligence data centers.
This SOCAMM2 memory uses LPDDR5X memory chips that usually need to be soldered directly to the server machine motherboard to obtain the best performance. With the SOCAMM2 module, the LPDDR5X memory chips can be installed on the motherboard in a modular manner, just like installing memory on a regular computer, but flat.
With the use of SOCAMM2 memory, it is expected that adding memory to a data center will not require replacing components as large as a server machine motherboard, but as easy as replacing memory modules. The horizontal design of the SOCAMM2 also makes it easier for companies to install a more comprehensive cooling system to cool data processing components.
Samsung says it is also working with JEDEC and NVIDIA to ensure that these memory components can be used efficiently across NVIDIA's diverse server ecosystem and ensure that processing performance and power consumption on motherboards are more efficient than existing offerings.
