Sweden Considers Banning Smartphones in Schools

After Singapore, Sweden is now taking a similar step by planning to ban the use of smartphones among school students. In fact, the movement towards such a ban has already existed in the country in recent times. In fact, almost 80% of schools have already enforced it, although its implementation still depends on the discretion of their respective principals.

However, the Swedish government is determined to expand the ban comprehensively starting August 2026. Through this implementation, students are required to hand over their smartphones at the beginning of the school day, and are only allowed to pick them up again after the learning session is over.

According to a study, students in Sweden were found to be more easily distracted by the use of digital devices in the classroom than the average student in the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development). Therefore, the Swedish government is proposing a ban on the use of smartphones throughout the school day to reduce disruption to the learning process.

If this proposal is approved by parliament, the ban will come into effect by the autumn of August 2026. In addition, this regulation not only applies to schools but also covers after-school care facilities.
