The use of drones on the battlefield has proven effective in the Russian-Ukrainian battlefield. It has become a thorn in the flesh of infantry soldiers with Ukraine also successfully using cheap drones to destroy Russian multi-million dollar bombers. They have also pioneered the use of drones on the sea surface to destroy Russian cargo ships.
Therefore, an anti-drone system that attacks ships is now being developed by DARPA in collaboration with Raytheon. The Pulling Guard project is a platform that is towed behind a cargo ship. It is equipped with various sensors, cameras and drones that act as eyes in the air to monitor the safety of the cargo ship it wants to protect.
When detecting a threat from an enemy air or sea surface drone, the Pulling Guard controller can launch weapons to destroy it before it attacks the cargo ship. Electronic weapons systems, missiles and directed energy weapons (such as lasers and microwaves) are among the things that the Pulling Guard can carry for this purpose.
The Pulling Guard was developed because cargo ships cannot carry their own weapons. This is the reason why even if attacked by pirates, the crew can only fight back using water cannons. With the Pulling Guard pulled behind the cargo ship, it is a way to place weapons on the cargo ship.
