White-collar jobs typically describe office tasks, or types of work that require higher thinking capacity, such as banking, finance, management, studies and so on.
Recently, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman was interviewed by the Financial Times news site and said that AI technology has now shown rapid development, where it is now good enough to replace various manual tasks that previously could only be done by humans.
Mustafa, who was also the founder of the AI company DeepMind before joining Microsoft, has said that AI can be seen to begin replacing white-collar workers within 12-18 months. We are now between the era of language models (LLM) and artificial general intelligence (AGI) and has called this era “Artificial Capable Intelligence”.
In this era of Artificial Capable Intelligence, he said that tasks that require high thinking capacity such as research, calculation, education and so on can be done by AI faster.
AI taking over more scientific tasks may be seen as an inevitable phase, after generative AI is seen to start “producing” creative content through writing, drawing, audio and video that is increasingly difficult to distinguish from work produced by real humans.
There have been several reports from several parties that agree and disagree with what Mustafa Suleyman said, but looking at the latest developments in AI technology, it would not be surprising if it were true that the technology will not only replace more technical blue-collar jobs, but also white-collar jobs that require critical thinking skills.
In the video interview, Mustafa also said that entry-level jobs could all be replaced by AI, but it also means that everyone can use AI technology to help develop their own business ideas.
