A new update from Discord announced the implementation of teen-friendly default settings globally starting March 2026. With this, all new and existing users aged 13 and over will have a safer experience as communication will be more tightly controlled, access to certain age spaces will be restricted and sensitive content will be automatically filtered.
Through this, users will have to go through an age verification process to change settings or access certain content. Discord provides several easy ways such as age estimation via face or using identification documents while maintaining privacy with direct operation on the device and the documents are deleted after verification. In addition, the age verification status will also not be visible to other users so user privacy is always maintained.
These default safety settings will take effect next March. Among the measures implemented are that sensitive content will be obscured except for users who are verified as adults, messages from unknown people will be placed in a special box, and only verified adult users can speak on the ‘Stage’ on the server.
In addition, Discord introduced the Teen Council, a youth advisory council consisting of 10–12 people aged 13 to 17. It provides a space for young people to share their views on the needs of teenagers, how they connect and what makes them feel safe on the platform. Applications to join the Teen Council are open until May 1, 2026.
