The Lamborghini Lanzador concept was shown in 2023 as the basis for the company's first EV, which has been known for its high-powered vehicles. After the Lanzador launch was delayed by a year to 2029, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said the launch has now been canceled because demand for it is "almost zero," according to a Sunday Times report.
Lamborghini customers, according to Winkelmann, still want an "emotional experience" with their cars and therefore still appreciate the roar of a gasoline-powered engine. Without demand from customers, Lamborghini does not want to spend the high costs of producing an EV that may not sell. Even if production of the Lanzador is canceled, Lamborghini will still offer PHEV vehicles such as the Revuelto and Urus.
This move by Lamborghini may be wise after seeing the failures of electrification of classic vehicles by Harley Davidson, Ford, Porsche and Volkswagen. Ford canceled the F-150 Lightning truck because the real customers of this model only wanted models with diesel and gasoline engines that offer longer driving range and, more importantly, self-repair. Porsche's experiment with the Taycan also caused losses of hundreds of millions.
In a situation where legacy brands have failed to make the transition to EVs, Ferrari has just shown off its first EV cabin design, which received a touch from Jony Ive's Lovefrom a few weeks ago. Will there be demand for the eFerrari or will this project also be scrapped after seeing other brands fail?
