Google announced Android Automotive OS (AAOS) which is the operating system for future vehicles. While Android Auto has only focused on vehicle entertainment systems, AAOS has been expanded to also control lights, air conditioning, seats, driver profiles and more.
AAOS is an open platform that can reduce complexity and speed up vehicle development. Previously, vehicle manufacturers built their own software with various modules from different suppliers, making integration difficult and slowing down innovation.
With AAOS, the in-car experience is smoother and more consistent. For vehicle owners, new features will be available faster through OTA updates. This project was developed by Google with Renault Group and Qualcomm. Google plans to offer AAOS as open source by the end of the year.
AAOS is seen as a competitor to Apple Car Play Ultra which was announced in 2022. Although 13 manufacturers were initially interested in using it, so far only Aston Martin, Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis will continue to integrate it into their vehicles.
