Instagram Removes Full Encryption Feature for Messaging (DM)

Meta has now announced that Instagram will remove the full encryption feature for messaging, effective May 8, 2026. Meta stated that this feature was removed because not many people use full encryption support when sending messages on the Instagram service.

Alternatively, Meta asks users to use WhatsApp if they want to use full encryption support when messaging. Through full encryption support, other parties cannot read the messages sent, and they can only be read by the sender and recipient.

Previously, TikTok also confirmed that they will not support full encryption for messaging in their application. Local social application, Daun has also recently added messaging support.
