The Selangor State Flagpole was inaugurated by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah at Dataran Selangor, Shah Alam yesterday. With a height of 120 meters, it now holds the status of the tallest flagpole in Southeast Asia, surpassing the Motherland Flagpole in Sarawak which is 99 meters tall.
The Selangor State Flagpole is recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records as the tallest flagpole in Southeast Asia. It flies the Selangor flag measuring 15 x 30 meters and weighing 50 kilograms. For 10 days a year, it will fly the Jalur Gemilang in conjunction with the Independence Day celebration. The Selangor State Flagpole was inaugurated on March 8 in conjunction with the birthday of the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.
Dataran Selangor, which is the location of the Selangor State Flagpole, uses the Tanjung Kelopak Sembilan flower design motif representing the 9 districts in the state. The construction project cost RM8.56 million with construction starting on 10- September 10 2024 and completed on 7 March 2026.
Although the Selangor State Flagpole is the tallest in Southeast Asia, it is still low when compared to the world's tallest flagpole located in Cairo, Egypt with a height of 201.95 meters.
